Philanthropy

Sigma Kappa supports four philanthropies:

Gerontology, Alzheimer’s Disease, the Maine Seacoast Mission, and Inherit the Earth

At Alpha Delta we focus mainly on raising money for Alzheimer’s Disease research, working closely with the Alzheimer’s Association. The Alzheimer’s Association provides information for people that are affected by the disease and funds research for prevention and a cure. Every year we actively participate in activities to raise money for the cause.

Memory Walk: Memory Walk is a national event held all over the country. All Sigma Kappa chapters participate in their local walk. We won 1st place in the 2009 Knoxville Memory Walk by raising over $16,000! It’s a great opportunity to work with the community to raise funds and awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease.

Dodge Ball Tournament: We host an annual dodge ball tournament to raise money for our philanthropies. The entire UT community is invited to play dodge ball and raise money for the fight against Alzheimer’s Disease.

Band Party: Sigma Kappa is the only sorority on campus that has a Band Party. We’ve had the Velcro Pygmies and Fly By Radio perform in the past. Admission from the concert goes to the Alzheimer’s Association and the Sigma kappa Foundation. This year, we are hosting Nashville’s rising country star, Dustin Lynch!

The Maine Seacoast Mission provides assistance to the people who live on the costal islands of Maine. During the winter months, these islands are completely frozen off from the mainland, leaving the residents without access to necessities. The Mission provides church and pastoral work, financial aid, food banks, recycled clothing shops, youth programs, crisis intervention and ministries to these people. We collect toiletries and school supplies to be given out by the Maine Seacoast Mission. Because Sigma Kappa was founded in Maine, this philanthropy is especially close to our hearts.

Inherit the Earth is an opportunity to combine our work with gerontology and the continuing desire to “go green!” Under UT’s Campus Beautification initiative, we’ve adopted a spot near the Presidential Courtyard that we maintain to keep the campus looking beautiful.

Other Sorority and Fraternity Philanthropy Events: Just like Sigma Kappa, other Greek organizations host various philanthropy events to raise funds for their causes. We participate in as many as we can, enjoying the opportunity to socialize with other greeks and raising money for a good cause.
